MINUTES OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS’ MEETING OF June 2, 2022
A meeting of the Board of Directors was held in person in North Berwick, Maine on June 2, 2022 at 7:00 p.m. with all members attending except Ms. Hopper, Mr. Doiron and Ms. Manley. Ms. Mallett and Ms. Travers were remote, all others were present in person. There were 6 in the audience.
The chair shared the public input statement.
Public Input: Ms. Jeri Basko of Lebanon shared her concerns regarding the book We Got This that was used for some professional development in the district. She feels that it is “garbage” and that the board should have not allowed the administration to push this book on staff. Essentially she feels ashamed that this is in our schools. She feels that the board is charged with safeguarding the students from what she believes is an inappropriate teaching tool.
The board then reviewed the Minutes of May 5, 2022. Ms. Lovejoy made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Stanton to approve the minutes of May 5, 2022 as amended. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.
The board then reviewed the Minutes of May 19, 2022. Ms. Hagenbuch made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Lovejoyto approve the minutes of May 19, 2022. All members voted in favor except Ms. Mallett who abstained and the motion passed.
The board tabled the minutes of May 26th for the next meeting.
Student report: The red carpet week for seniors is next week as they geared up for their finals. Their spirits are high with anticipation for graduation. Underclassmen have finals next week and they wrap up on the 14th.
The Superintendent shared Lori Lodge as the nomination for assistant principal in the Lebanon Schools. Ms. Hagenbuch made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Lovejoy to approve the nomination of Ms. Lodge as assistant principal. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.
Academic Updates:
Graduation is on June 10th. The plan is for an outdoor graduation. Convocation is Thursday evening at 6:00 pm.
Athletic Updates:
The regular season has ended for our Spring sports! Each team has made the playoffs this year!
Outdoor Track travels to Bangor on Saturday for the Class A Maine State track meet! 14 Track and Field athletes have qualified for the state meet!
Softball is hosting South Portland next Tuesday in the preliminary playoff round. First pitch is slated for 4:30pm.
Baseball travels to Portland on Monday for their prelim game! First pitch is 4:30pm.
Girls Lacrosse travels to Scarborough on Monday for their prelim playoff game! Game time is 6:30pm.
Boys Lacrosse is waiting for the heal points to be finalized, however, we anticipate that they will be traveling to Thornton Academy for their first round of the playoffs!
Educational Update::
Staff attendance for April 25-May 5, 2022 ranged from 90% to 100%.
Student attendance ranged from 90 % to 98%. All very strong.
Employment:
The Superintendent shared the transfer of Ms. Lauren Shain from Assistant Athletic Director to PE teacher at NMS. She is looking forward to the position and being involved at the Middle School.
The Superintendent then shared that Eustaquio Dones is being transferred from full time music at NBES to part time music teacher at the Knowlton School and will fill in the rest of his time as the PR coordinator for the district. This is a new position for us and we are looking forward to working with Mr. Dones and creating a proactive community approach.
The Superintendent shared with the board the nomination of Ms. Karen Heim as the NMS Spec. Ed. LCSW. Ms. Lovejoy made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Hagenbuch to approve the nomination of Ms. Heim. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.
The Superintendent shared with the board the nomination of Ms. Amber O’Neill as the FLEX LSW. Ms. Lovejoy made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Stanton to approve the nomination of Ms. O’Neil. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.
The Superintendent shared with the board the nomination of Ms. Meghan Griffin as the NHS English teacher. Ms. Hagenbuch made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Lovejoy to approve the nomination of Ms. Griffin. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.
The Superintendent shared with the board the nomination of Ms. Erin Foster as the NHS English teacher. Ms. Lovejoy made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Hagenbuch to approve the nomination of Ms. Foster. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.
The Superintendent shared with the board the nomination of Ms. Brittany Reid Martin as the NHS SW. Ms. Hagenbuch made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Lovejoy to approve the nomination of Ms. Reid Martin. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.
The Superintendent shared with the board the nomination of Ms. Madeline Doyle as the NHS Special Education Resource teacher. Ms. Hagenbuch made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Lovejoy to approve the nomination of Ms. Doyle. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.
The Superintendent shared with the board the nomination of Ms. Natalie Batchelder as a 1st grade teacher at NBES. Ms. Lovejoy made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Stanton to approve the nomination of Ms. Batchelder. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.
The Superintendent shared with the board the nomination of Ms. Cassandra Salerno as the NBES Counselor. Ms. Hagenbuch made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Lovejoy to approve the nomination of Ms. Salerno. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.
The Superintendent shared with the board the nomination of Mr. Gregory Ouellette, as 3rd grade teacher a the Hanson School. Ms. Hagenbuch made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Mallett to approve the nomination of Mr. Ouellette. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.
The Superintendent shared with the board the nomination of Ms. Samantha Payne as t4th grade teacher at ELKS. Ms. Mallett made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Travers to approve the nomination of Ms. Payne. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.
The Superintendent shared with the board the nomination of Ms. Shannon Metevier as Grade 1 teacher at the Hanson School. Ms. Hagenbuch made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Lovejoy to approve the nomination of Ms. Metevier. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.
The Superintendent shared with the board the nomination of Ms. Kayla Goodwin as a 2nd grade teacher at the Hanson School. Ms. Hagenbuch made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Stantpn to approve the nomination of Ms. Goodwin. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.
The superintendent shared the resignation of Ms Andrea Gove, Hussey School teacher. Ms. Lovejoyt made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Hagenbuch to accept the resignation of Ms. Gove. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.
The superintendent shared the resignation of Ms. Chelsea Grant, Hussey School teacher. Ms. Hagenbuch made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Lovejoy to accept the resignation of Ms. Grant. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.
The superintendent shared the resignation of Ms. Debbie Moores, Interventionist at Knowtlon School. Ms. Lovejoy made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Hagenbuch to accept the resignation of Ms. Moores. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.
The superintendent shared the resignation of Ms. Laura Mazzola, NHS English Teacher. Ms. Mallett made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Lovejoy to accept the resignation of Ms. Dunnington. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.
Other Business:
Ms. Mallett discussed her opinion regarding the “We Got This” book. She felt like it was an interesting decision making tool. She felt like it had a lot of rationale that you might find in management or business classes. It focused on listening, revisiting information and making sure that students are approached in a way to provide an even playing field. Her take away was that it could be a useful tool. She very strongly felt that it had nothing offensive in it.
Ms. Travers asked about the use of the book. She asked specifically about the use of the book in the classroom and with the teachers, asking about the intention of the use of the book. The board discussed that the book a bit more. It was noted that the intention of the book seemed to be about meeting children where they’re at and finding and filling their needs. Reminders around framing questions and ideas about how to engage with a variety of individuals were noted.
Other:
Ms. Neubert asked about the secondary water testing results and it was noted that they have not come back
Ms. Hagenbuch made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Stanton to go into executive session pursuant to 1M.R.S.A§405(6)(A) Evaluation of Officials/Appointees/Employees. All members voted in favor and the motion passed. In at 7:45 pm. Out at 8:13 pm
Ms. Hagenbuch made the motion and it was seconded by Ms. Lovejoy to approve the contracts of the central office administration as presented.. All members voted in favor and the motion passed.
Reminder that we will be voting on the budget June 14th in each of the towns. There will also be school board membership voting. Please get out to vote and encourage all.
